The Movado's Museum Dial watch, a design classic for today

Posted 11 May 2020 by Miriam

Swiss watch brand Movado is not very well known in the UK, and that is very unjustified in our opinion. Because the Museum Dial watch, famous all over the world, is a real design classic that is still relevant today.

What is the Museum Dial watch?

The American designer Nathan George Horwitt was a supporter of the Bauhaus movement from the 1920s and 1930s. In 1947, inspired by the aesthetics of modernism, he created the primal design of the watch that still forms the basis of the Movado watch collection.

The most striking element of the dial is a solitary dot at 12 o'clock, symbolizing the high sun at noon. The simple straight hands represent the movement of the earth.

This unique design was the first watch to be included in the permanent design collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) in New York in 1960. Since then, the watch has been called the Museum Dial watch.

Classic design, still current

The design of this first Museum watch still looks very modern and still inspires young designers. From the base, the design has always been refined and brought up-to-date. In this way, the Museum Watch remains up to date and offers a wide choice of colours and straps for design enthusiasts.

Modern 47

The Modern 47 line is most closely related in form to the original design. With a modern colour scheme, beautifully incorporated into the dial and strap, the watch is available in 40 mm for men and 35 mm for women.

Museum Classic Mesh

The Museum Classic watch originally came with either a leather or a classic stainless steel strap. The new generation of this collection features modern metal mesh straps that look luxurious and sit comfortably on the wrist. The women's model (28 mm) has a shiny white, blue or black mother-of-pearl dial on a mesh strap in yellow gold, rose gold or stainless steel. The men's model (40 mm) has a dark blue or black lacquered dial framed with a polished stainless steel or black PVD coated case and strap.

Ultra Slim

The Ultra Slim collection combines the timeless design with a modern, slim silhouette. Completely on trend are the pastel shades and neutral colors that ensure that these watches match any outfit. Luxurious straps made of soft calf leather are super comfortable to wear. In this line, the men's models are 40 mm and the women's models are 35 mm.

More Movado watches

In addition to the new Modern 47, Classic Mesh and Ultra Slim lines, the Movado watch collection contains many more unique watches. From sleek chronographs to distinct design watches with a hollow dial and raised indexes. View them online now to experience these special watches for yourself.
