Posted 16 August 2022 by Miriam Reading time approximately 4 minutesOne of the moments in the watch year that we at watch.co.uk always look forward to is the arrival of the new Seiko Save the Ocean watches. Three special edition Prospex diving watches, of which a portion of the proceeds are donated by Seiko to organizations fighting for the preservation of our oceans.
This year, Seiko has again made 3 special Prospex watches whose design refers to a vulnerability in the oceans, namely the melting polar ice. As a result, several species of animals are threatened. For example, the Emperor Penguins that live in the Antarctic, which served as a model for the Save the Ocean watches in 2021. This year, the ice of the North and South Pole itself takes center stage.
Three reinterpretations of classic Seiko diving watches
Seiko diving watches were very popular with researchers in the 1960s and 1970s who wore them on expeditions to the North and South Poles. This year, Seiko based the Save The Ocean models on three legendary diver's watches from this period.
These new models are inspired by the glaciers that define the landscapes and seascapes of the Arctic and Antarctic.
Each model features a textured dial in a shade found in glacial ice, from deep blue to white.
SPB297J1: Reinterpretation of Seiko's very first diving watch
The model with the deep blue dial is based on Seiko's first diver's watch from 1965, which proved its reliability during the Japanese Antarctic research expeditions from 1966 to 1969.
The modern version of the first 300m waterproof diving watch: SPB299J1
A light blue dial and dark blue bezel adorn the modern take on this historic 1968 diver's watch. This was the first Seiko 300-meter water resistant watch with a 10-beat mechanical movement.
1970 Diver Naomi Uemura
The white dial is housed in the same distinctively shaped case as the Seiko classic from 1970 the watch is based on. This watch became world-renowned because it was worn by Japanese adventurer Naomi Uemura, who, from 1974 to 1976, made a solo journey of 12,500 km by dog sled from Greenland to Alaska.
As always with Seiko Prospex excellent specs
Like their illustrious predecessors, all three watches have excellent specifications; Powered by a 6R35 caliber movement, with a 70-hour power reserve. A water resistance of 200 meters and a steel diver's bracelet with safety clasp and extension.
