See the ocean through the eyes of a diver with Seiko Prospex

Posted 8 December 2020 by Miriam Reading time approximately 3 minutes

Anyone who has ever been (deep sea) diving knows the feeling of being absorbed into another world. Special encounters with creatures as old as the world. The beauty of the vast ocean. Seiko captures this feeling in a special series of Prospex diving watches, which at the same time supports the Save The Ocean marine conservancy.

Seiko Prospex Save The Ocean

In 2018 Seiko released the first Save The Ocean watches. Its theme was "Blue Whale". The ocean blue dial had the texture of of a blue whale's skin. These watches were a great success and were succeeded in 2019 by the "White shark" with wave-shaped shark fins as the dial structure.

Save the Ocean 2020: Manta Ray

And now in 2020, the theme of the Save the Ocean watches is the "Manta Ray" (stingray). Perhaps the most beautiful Save the Ocean ever.

The blue of the dial has the color of water at a depth of 10 meters. The rays swim on the surface. As if you were a diver among these beautiful ceatures. Because the dial turns darker towards the edges, the image has extra depth without distracting what a diving watch is all about; Clear Lumibrite-coated hands and indices and the date magnifying glass in the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

The Manta Ray is released in two variants; The SRPE39K1 "Turtle" and the SRPE33K1 "King Samurai".

The Turtle (so named because the case is shaped like a turtle) is a hefty watch measuring 45mm wide and 13.4mm high. But thanks to the design with extremely short lugs, it looks a lot smaller. The turtle style has been used in diving watches since the 1970s and perfectly suits the retro trend of 2020!

The Seiko Prospex SRPE33 "King Samurai" is slightly smaller: 43.8 mm wide and 12.8 mm thick. A traditional diving watch with a clear, practical shape that always remains current. In watch enthusiast circles, Samurai was already a recognizable case shape, the reason that the monniker King Samurai is now used has to do with the improved specifications of the watch.

Both watches feature a ceramic bezel, screw crown, sapphire crystal and are water resistant up to 200 meters of water pressure. The included link bracelet is equipped with a safety folding clasp and also has an extension so you can wear the watch over a neoprene diving suit and is of very good quality for the price (as we can expect from a brand like Seiko).

The automatic Seiko movements used in these watches are the 4R35 in the SRPE33 (date only), while the SRPE39 has a day-date window (4R36 movement). Both watches have a power reserve of approximately 40 hours.

PADI Collaboration

Since the launch of the first Seiko diving watch in 1965, Seiko has been committed to making diving safer and easier for both the professional and recreational diver. Thanks to continuous innovation and the superior price-quality ratio of Seiko diving watches, the brand has an excellent reputation in the diving community.

Seiko is an official partner of PADI, the professional association of diving instructors, with more than 6,300 dive centers and 136,000 qualified professional PADI instructors around the world. PADI also supports the Save The Ocean organization, because what good is a diving certificate if the sea is too polluted to dive into? Now and in the future.

Prospex PADI diving watches

The successful range of Seiko Prospex PADI diving watches combine excellent specifications with a distinctive style. The PADI versions are available in solar, solar chrono and automatic. The watches always have the PADI logo colors blue and red.

The latest model added to the PADI family is model SRPE27K1 or the “Monster PADI”. The nickname 'monster' was given to the watch because of its striking case shape, where recesses in the rotating diver's bezel continue into the case. As if a monster took a bite out of the case.

The case has a diameter of 42.4 mm and a thickness of 13.4 mm and is fitted with a blue metal bezel. Striking features are the day-date display, luminous indexing and hands for better readability in dark environments (such as underwater). The automatic movement has a power reserve of up to 41 hours.
