Posted 16 December 2024 by Carmen Reading time approximately 2 minutes

Sicily, cradle of different styles and the inspiration for Isola Bella watches

The design of Isola Bella watches has its roots in Sicilian tradition, legends and Baroque style. Sicily has been a crossroads and cradle of many civilizations, and is characterized by a mix of different styles. In this article we will take you on a tour of this magical island and the watches it inspired.

Famous symbols of Sicily used in the watches

Triscele

The Triscele is an ancient Celtic symbol consisting of 3 spirals joined at a central point, plus three intertwined spirals. That is, a being with three legs (from ancient Greek: τρισκελής, triskelḗs). The history of the ancient Triskelion is still shrouded in mystery because it is linked to Greek mythology. The flag of Sicily contains the triscele, with at its center the head of Medusa with a pair of wings and three wheat ears.

The artisans of Isola Bella inserted the triscele in the center of the watch dial, surrounding it with crystals or other traditional symbols. This watch is an eye-catcher!

Moor's Head

Legend  said that during the Arab domination of Sicily, a young woman from  Palermo fell in love with an Arab man who was in the city and her love was reciprocated. When the man decided to confess to her that he already had a wife and children and that he would soon have to leave to return to them, the woman ,anger and jealous, killed the man at night, cutting off his head and using it as a vase to plant basil.

Isola Bella has created watches representing dark brown heads and made them a modern symbol to be worn with ease.

The Sicilian cart

The Sicilian cart was used in the past for the transport of goods throughout the Sicilian territory. Today, it  is  embellished with traditional carvings and bright pictorial decorations and it has become an object of artisanal art, as well as one of the symbols of Sicilian folklore.

The colorful watch with the cart is part of the modern collection of Isola Bella. Very eccentric, it attracts attention.

Inspiring Sicilian nature and produce

Of course, the creators of Isola Bella watches were inspired by the beautiful landscapes of Sicily, such as the sea that surrounds the island and its fruits, such as the famous Sicilian organic lemons.

Coral

Trapani coral is a precious material whose workmanship is appreciated internationally thanks to the skill of coral artisans. Coral is also called the red gold of the sea and is used to create jewelry of extraordinary workmanship.

For example, the dial of the Corallo watch recalls the wonderful sea urchins and corals that adorn the ocean floor, also recalled in the sea blue of the strap.

Lemons

Thanks to the warm sun and geographical position of Sicily, the production of cultivated lemons is enormous. These lemons are large, juicy, very sweet and can be eaten as a dessert. They are also used to make the famous Limoncello.

The watch decorated with lemons is part of the modern collection of Isola Bella

The lucky pine cone

The Sicilian pine cone is a symbol of luck and prosperity. It is given as a lucky charm and in almost all Sicilian   homes we find one. The pine cones are made of Caltagirone ceramic and are colored and in different sizes.

The Isola Bella pine cone watch is a lucky timepiece for those who wear it.

Isola bella watches as a reflection of Sicilian culture

Culture in Sicily is like a beautiful woman .... Every time you look at her you discover a different side of her. In fact, in Isola Bella women's watches there are all the facets and colors dedicated to women. Extravagant colors and designs for strong and enterprising women. Watches with more delicate patterns and colors for more romantic and sweet women.

Ceramics

Caltagirone ceramics are handmade. Each piece is unique. Plates, suns, vases, fish and corals. The decorated ceramic tiles are very colorful and have inspired Isola Bella in the creation of their watches.

The ceramic watch is colorful, delicious and original. A true piece of design.

Baroque

The Baroque era in Sicily, with its richly decorated style, reflected a noble, bizarre and very rich society. In fact, the term baroque means extravagant and bizarre. And in Isola Bella women's watches we find precisely this unique and genuine eccentricity.

Paladini

The Sicilian puppet theater, or Opera dei Pupi, is an ancient theatrical performance featuring the

paladins of Charlemagne. The Sicilian puppets are the protagonists of chivalric stories derived from novels from the period of French domination in Sicily.

The Paladini watch is a timeless reminder of sicilian culture.
