Coming Soon: Bulova Oceanographer “666” with rubber strap
Posted 26 November 2021 by Miriam Reading time approximately 2 minutesThe watches in the Archive Series from Bulova are iconic designs revitalized for today. The classic designs are literally taken from heritage models from the Bulova collection, but at the same time contain modern elements as the ultimate tribute to the history of Bulova. Coming soon: a new addition to the Oceanographer's series of reissue diving watches.
The Oceanographer in 1972
In 2020, Bulova re-released the 1972 Oceanographer, a standout model from the brand's extensive archive of historic timepieces. This watch was popularly known as the "Devil Diver" because on the dial was printed 666 feet (201.168 meters). Of course, this distinctive element is now also prominent on the dial.
The Oceanographer was designed for harsh diving conditions. The watch fitted closely on the diver's wrist with its unique link strap.Other notable features were the large luminescent tritium-filled hands which provided excellent legibility - a diver's requirement. Tritium is slightly radioactive and is therefore no longer used today.
The bezel of the watch was - progressive for the time - uni-directional. A real Bulova innovation. There was one function that we take for granted today in a dive watch, which was missing from the Oceanographer; The diving watch had no screw-down crown. The reissue has of course! The unique steel strap with comfortable rounded links has also been updated.
The newest member of the Oceanographer family
As a tribute to the Oceanographer diving watch from the 1970s, Bulova unveils yet another new model - this time with a sporty and comfortable rubber strap.
The original size of 41 mm diameter has been maintained, but the watch appears smaller due to the compact shape and also has a relatively narrow 19 mm lugs, which enhances the retro look. The striking watch features the iconic "666 feet" of the Oceanographer on the dial and is ISO certified with water resistance up to 200 meters.
Powered by a self-winding mechanical movement with a 42-hour power reserve, the watch is offered with a stainless steel screw-down case and screw-down crown. Further details include the black-orange uni-directional bezel, hands with luminescent markers, date function and sapphire crystal with blue anti-reflective coating.
More Bulova at Watch.co.uk
The Oceanographer diving watches are not the first reissues of historical models. Bulova also has a rich history in military watches. But innovation does not stand still either; Take for example the special Curv watches with curved movement as well as a large range of modern ladies and gent's watches.
