Citizen Super Titanium ™ on Earth and in space
Posted 9 April 2020 by MiriamIn 1970, Citizen introduced the very first watch on Earth made entirely of titanium. And in 2021, Citizen Super Titanium ™ will go into space! Because the hardening technology for titanium that Citizen developed 50 years ago makes the material ideally suited to cover the HakutoR iSpace lunar lander.
Tougher than steel
Titanium is by nature a fairly soft material, which made it less suitable for making watches. Until Citizen developed the Duractect technology, with which titanium can be hardened. This makes the material up to five times harder than stainless steel. Thus, scratch-resistant and easy to process into beautifully designed watches.
More benefits of Super Titanium ™
Titanium itself has very favourable properties. It is anti-allergenic - it does not react with the skin. It is also lightweight; up to 40% lighter than steel. This has made Super Titanium ™ the ideal material for anyone looking for a strong, scratch resistant, lightweight watch since 1970. Its strength and light weight also make Super Titanium ™ particularly suitable for spaceships components. That is why Citizen has partnered with the Japanese space company Hakuto R, which has a mission to the moon for 2021.
