How to wear a watch

Posted 16 May 2023 by Berna Reading time approximately 2 minutes

A watch really comes into its own when worn in the right way. But how do you wear a watch according to proper etiquette? First and foremost, a watch should be comfortable to wear. To wear a watch the right way, it is important to consider the following points; am I wearing the watch on the right wrist? Not too high or too low? Too tight or too loose? On the inside of your wrist or not? Besides practical matters, a watch plays an important role in styling your outfit. A sporty watch on a suit is not a good luck but how do you combine a watch with a suit? Read all about watch etiquette here, so that your most important accessory really finishes off your outfit.

Wear on the right wrist

We often see that a watch is worn on the left wrist. Therefore, many people think that a watch should always be worn on the left wrist. However, a watch should be worn on the wrist of the non-dominant arm. Because most of the population worldwide is right-handed (only 15% left-handed people). Many people in the street therefore wear a watch on their left wrist. Wearing the watch on your non-dominant arm increases comfort, because your daily activities such as eating, writing, etc. are not hindered by the watch.

Do not wear your watch too high or too low

You bought a nice watch, but it sits too high or too low. In both situations, the watch does not come out well. For the best result, wear a watch above the bump on the outside of the wrist. This way, you are always assured of the right position and the most wearing pleasure!

How tight do you wear a watch?

Too loose or too tight, both are not comfortable on the wrist. So how tight should a watch be? The best comfort is achieved by setting the watch tight enough to prevent it from sliding back and forth. A good rule of thumb is to allow for a play of two centimetres, so you can still slide the watch up and down a bit. Or make sure you always have space to put one finger between your wrist and the watch strap. This will prevent the watch from being too tight on your wrist.

In this article we show how to size your watch bracelet yourself.

Wearing the watch on the inside of your wrist

You don't come across them often but they are there, people who like to wear their watch on the inside of their arm. Although it is not against etiquette, we usually wear a watch on the outside of the wrist. Wearing your watch on the inside of your wrist reduces the reflection of the glass by the sun. For this reason, soldiers would also wear their watches on the inside of their wrists to remain incognito.

How to combine a watch with a suit

A watch is like icing on the cake. Especially when wearing a nice suit, a suitable watch cant miss out. A matching watch can be very decisive for the appearance of your look. It is therefore important that the watch really matches the complete outfit. A large, thick watch does not fit nicely under the sleeve of a suit and is therefore not a good choice. For pairing your watch with a suit, it is important to know whether it is a business formal or Black Tie. For a business occasion, the outfit will look best with a more classic model. Do you really want to stand out during an event, such as a Blak Tie?  Then opt for a modern and sleek design. When wearing a suit, the emphasis is mainly on the watch, as the clothing style is controlled. A sleek design preserves tranquillity and at the same time provides an eye-catcher that no one can ignore.
