With your watch on snorkeling, cycling through a heavy downpour or accidentally dropping it in a full sink - in one case it's a complete disaster, in the other it's the intention. So it can be useful to know how waterproof your watch is. The fact that a watch is waterproof doesn't mean that you can trust yourself to dive into the sea without any worries. Whether or not a watch is suitable for this, depends on the degree of water resistance expressed in meters, ATM (atmosphere) or bar (atmospheric pressure). Most watches can withstand some perspiration or a little splash of water, but only the special sports and diving watches are designed to withstand water pressure. On this page you will find all the information about water resistance.
Water resistant watches are available for both men and women, in different degrees of water resistance and with watch bands of different materials. If you want a watch that is suitable for diving, it will often have a watch band made of rubber, plastic or stainless steel. Watches with a leather band are not resistant to water and therefore generally have a lower water resistance.
A higher water resistance also involves other functions. For example, a watch suitable for scuba diving often has a helium bleed valve and the rotating ring (bezel) shows the remaining diving time. So before you buy a watch, think carefully about what you want to do with it and what is important, to avoid disappointment later on.
Note: A watch that indicates that it is waterproof without indicating any depth or pressure is only splashproof.
